Can you believe it’s almost September? Well, it will actually BE September when this post gets published. This year is flying by and it seems to go faster since I started creating art journal pages in my old calendars each year. I wonder why that is? Hmmm. Maybe because creating the pages makes me more aware of what day it is. So, here we have July and August calendar pages. I got a little behind but I got caught up just in time for the next month to roll in. lol August was an odd month. I started riding my bike 15 miles a day 6 days a week, gave up coffee and working on cutting out sugar all in the same month. I think this month went by so fast because I was in an exhausted, coffee deprived state of mind. lol Ok…a slight exaggeration but I have to say I was super tired for a few weeks while I adjusted to the changes. Now, I’m ready for Fall and can’t wait to see the leaves change colors. I always feel extra creative in Fall and Winter for some reason. Spring makes me want to bring out the entire box of crayons. Oh wait, I do that no matter what time of year it is. lol And Summer, well, we try to get along. lol Thanks for stopping by. See you again soon.
I named this art journal page “Just Play” because that is exactly what I wanted to do…play! I had a few stressful days and just wanted to relax and have some fun. I used a few paint colors, a charcoal pencil, my sharpie poster paint pen and a few other things and just went to town. I love to paint in a sketchy, painty way that would to some people seem “messy”. But, that’s the fun for me and it keeps me from trying to create “perfect”. I hope you will take some time to play in your art journal and just take a break from the everyday things in life we have to deal with and escape into your own “mess”. 🙂
I was going through the photos on my computer and moving some of them to a backup hard drive when I came across this art journal page I created some time ago. I left it on my computer because I like the colors so much and I love how the page turned out. Also, it’s a tiny reminder to me of why I created this page and how on days I need it most to choose to forgive and not hold on to anything bothering me. It is a gift I give myself and every time I do it I am free to go on with my day and enjoy the wonderful things it has to offer. I thought I would share the journal page with you. I hope you are having a wonderful day.
The last few mornings I have been out on my bike ride it has felt like Fall and it’s still early August in Tennessee. The breeze has felt cool making it easier to “do my time”. lol But it sure has made me eager for Fall which is one of my favorite times of the year. So, when I sat down to play in my art journal I had no idea what would show up. But, based on the page you see pictured here I think I had Fall on my mind just a bit. I love Fall, I love creating and I love this page. By the way, I did film this process but I neglected to change the battery in my cameras remote control so half of the video was filmed “on” when it was supposedto be “off” and vice versa. Soooo, no video. I may go ahead and put it up just for fun though. We’ll see. Thanks for stopping by.
It’s playtime!!! Your art journal is your playground. When I have no idea what I want to create I might open my art journal and just put in some washi tape and a few scraps. Or, I might scribble with a black marker then add some paint color in random places. It’s just fun to play in your art journal without a plan. It’s very freeing and opens up your mind to all kinds of creative inspiration. I just wanted to share a few photos of some art journal pages from one of my journals where I was just playing around and having a good time. Art is fun. The process of learning is exciting. Don’t wait until you think you have learned enough to start. Just jump in and play and let the journey take you where it wants to go. Just have fun.
This is the June Calendar Art Journal Page that almost wasn’t. lol Sometimes things just don’t go very smoothly when you are creating and this was one of those times. But, its times like this that make me love the pieces that come out the way you want them to even more. And it is times like this help me appreciate the process and learn to look past a “pretty face” and see that the fun is in the journey. Without the journey of ups and down, good and bad, pretty art and not so pretty art we might miss something important in our learning process. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to miss a single step in my art journey. Thank you for joining me on my journey and I hope you are on one of your own.
I was in the mood to play in my “All Because Of Scraps” art journal the other day so I gathered up some scraps and glued them down on the page. Below are step by step photos of the process. It’s fun, relaxing and a easy way to use up scraps in your scrap bin. Give it a try. You never know what you will get just from using scraps.
Step 1: Starting with a blank page, I glued down scraps from my scrap bin on the page using a glue stick.
Step 2 : I glued down some borders I have had in my stash a long time. I cut them into different lengths and glued those on top of the scraps with a glue stick.
This is what the page looks like after the borders were glued on.
Step 3: I also had some negative space die cut scraps in my scrap bin so I pulled those out and glued them on top of the borders with a glue stick.
This is what the page looks like after I glued on the die cut scraps.
Step 4: I painted around the shapes of the negative space die cuts.
Step 5: I used white paint and a floral stencil all over the page.
Step 6: I used blue paint and a floral stencil all over the white stenciling.
Step 7: I used black paint and a letter stencil over the blue stenciling.
Step 8: I added some words to all of the bottles.
Step 9: I painted a small section with a little bit of white paint so I could add a title. Then, I added the title “Information You Can Use”. This is just a partial sentence I cut out of a magazine. I thought it was interesting so I added it.
Step 10: With a black Posca pen I outlined the title, the bottles and the words on the bottles. Then I added white dots around the black outline on the bottles using a Sharpie White Poster Paint Pen (water based) marker.
Step 11: I mixed some raw umber and glazing medium together in equal parts and painted it over the entire page. I let it dry just a few seconds then I wiped off the excess with a soft cloth leaving a light stained color on the page.
Step 12: I sealed the page with a light coat of Mod Podge.
That’s it. I love how it came out. This page would not exist if not for scraps. But it DOES exist now All Because Of Scraps! 🙂
After playing in my Dylusions art journal the other day I decided to make another art journal page the next day because I enjoyed playing in the journal so much the day before. I didn’t have a plan just like the previous day and I seem to have more fun that way. I wanted to use up more of my “stuff” so I decided on the journal paper on the left side of the page, some washi tape and a bunch of paper die cut flowers I have had in a box for some time. By the way, that box does not dwindle. It’s still as full as ever. What is up with that? lol Then, I set about just playing and I like what I wound up with. I need to make an effort to journal in my art journals at least once a week. 🙂
I was in the mood to do some playful art journaling so I grabbed up my larger, and sorely neglected, Dylusions art journal and started slapping down some paint without a plan other than just have some fun. After a while I started seeing some sections of the pages that looked like a flower and hair so I started building on those areas. That is how this playful, prim looking girl showed up. I call her “Happy Flower Girl” for a reason but it’s a little personal so I’ll leave her story to your imagination. I think I have more fun when I have no plan and don’t care what the outcome is so I need to stop hiding from my journal and use it more often than I do. Have fun playing in your art journals. 🙂
I’ve been talking about my paper bag project in the last few videos I have put up on You Tube. So I must be on a paper bag kick because the other day we went to the grocery store and we bought some Ginger Beer, a non alcoholic beverage, that is awesome and has “ginger bite” to it but that is beside the point. We have started asking the person bagging our groceries to wrapped the bottles individually because for some reason they want to put the bottles in a plastic bag all together unprotected, but that’s another story. lol Anyway, now they put each bottle into a small paper bag. Of course I kept them and could imagine all sorts of cute projects. I wasn’t about to let them sit around too long so I sat down the other day and made some little journals that can be used for inspiration, words, quotes, photos or anything you like. There isn’t much room for growth with this design so keeping it simple is best and they turn out so cute. So how did they get their name you ask? Well, “Rag” represents the fabric I use. “Tag” is because I used tags on each page. And, “Bag” is because, well, it’s a bag. lol Check out the photos below and if you would like to know how I made them hop over to YouTube and check out the video.
